Roth, Lorraine Van Riper Frisbie 91 March 25, 1920 Dec. 27, 2011 Lorraine Van Riper was born on March 25, 1920 to Frank and Katie Van Riper in Brown County, S.D. She was the seventh of eight children. Raised on a farm located on the banks of the James River, she learned to help her Mother in the home, gather eggs, take care of unclaimed baby lambs, and to ride her pony, "Beauty". She graduated from Groton High School in 1938 as Salutatorian of her class. Lorraine attended Aberdeen Commercial College and completed the Advanced Secretarial Course. She was employed as a secretary and was wed to Charles Burton Frisbie on June 1, 1941. While living in Aberdeen, S.D., Charles enlisted in the Signal Corps of the Army Reserve and was assigned overseas during World War II. In 1947, the couple's first child, Stephen Charles, was born. After enlisting in the South Dakota National Guard, Charles' unit was called to active duty during the Korean War serving time in the Aleutian Islands. Their second child, Nancy Mae, was born in 1950. After Charles' discharge from the National Guard in 1952, the family relocated to Portland. Lorraine was mainly a stay-at-home Mom but found time to serve as Secretary to her Pastor at St. Michael's Lutheran Church until Nancy was in third grade. She enjoyed knitting for others, and her home was always warm and open to visitors with freshly baked cookies in the cookie jar. In 1968, the family relocated to Milwaukie, where Lorraine attended Clackamas Community College in order to receive legal training. She was employed by Attorney Ashley Greene and later by Robert J. Morgan, Attorney-at-Law. In 1988, Lorraine retired to care for Charles, her ailing husband of over 49 years, who passed away in November of 1990. In October of 1991, Lorraine became the bride of Dr. Alfred R. Roth. The couple continued to reside in the Milwaukie home until June of 2009, at which time, they sold it and relocated to a cottage in King City. This provided them the opportunity to escape home ownership duties and to enjoy a life of travel and family activities. The blended family consisted of seven living children, 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished. Being the last of her generation within the Van Riper Family's eight brothers and sisters, she was elated when all of her remaining nieces, nephews and Northwest family members gathered for one last four day reunion this past sunny August in the Portland area. Being the family's loving "mother hen," she delighted in "gathering her chicks". Lorraine was a dedicated wife, mother, homemaker, church member and friend to many and will be dearly missed by all. She loved nothing more than to see her children, grandchildren and others succeed. Lorraine embraced a lifetime affiliation with the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod and was a current member at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Tigard. Lorraine passed away on Dec. 27, 2011 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents; her seven siblings; and her first husband, Charles. She is survived by her husband, Alfred Roth; son, Stephen (Paula) Frisbie of Portland; her daughter, Nancy (Michael) Frisbie Southard of Sherwood; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, 11 nieces and nephews, including five stepchildren, Theresa Shorten, Kathleen Achatz, Madeline Hahn, Dana Roth, Timothy Roth and numerous step-grandchildren.
