Janie spent her early years moving frequently as her father worked on highway construction projects throughout Oregon and Washington. After marrying Robert V. Long Sr., she followed his career to various places, including Woodburn, Tillamook, Alexandria, Virginia, and eventually back to Portland.
Janie devoted her life to caring for others. As a longtime caregiver to many children, she offered a nurturing presence and opened her home as a place of warmth and comfort. Her compassion extended beyond family and friends—she volunteered at Shriners Children's Hospital and was deeply involved in numerous fraternal organizations, including Job’s Daughters, Eastern Star, Ladies Oriental Shrine, Daughters of the Nile, Amaranth, Rebekahs, the Odd Fellows, and other Masonic groups.
A gifted crafter, Janie found joy in knitting, crocheting, sewing, and quilting. She created countless hats for the homeless and newborns and crocheted comforting octopuses for premature babies. She was known for her love of purple, her delightful pig collection, and sharing hockey games with her children.
She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Robert V. Long Sr.; her parents, Ernest D. Nothiger and Grace E. Rowley Nothiger; and her daughter-in-law, Christina Long.
Janie is lovingly remembered by her sister Carol May (Lyn) of Salinas, CA; her children Renae Evans (Mike) of Alexandria, Va; Robert Long Jr. of Troutdale, OR; Ronda Tyers (John) of Manassas, Virginia; and Risa Northway (Mark) of Oregon City, OR. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren—with a tenth great-grandchild soon to arrive, as well as her beloved dog, Darby.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 2 pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 2036 SE Jefferson St., Milwaukie, Oregon.
Contributions may be made in Janie’s memory to Shriners Children's Hospital.
