With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai, who passed away peacefully on May 19th, 2026, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born on March 2nd, 1958, in Hai Phong, Vietnam, Mai was one of 7 children born to the late Nguyen Van Thuy and Ha Thi Thong. She spent her early years in Vietnam, and after the war she escaped and found freedom in Hong Kong. Through the sponsorship of Peace Lutheran Church, in Sioux Falls, SD, she immigrated to the United States alongside her older brother’s family, beginning a new chapter filled with hope and determination.
After settling in Oregon, she earned an Associate’s Degree in Industrial Design from Portland Community College. A year later, Mai welcomed her first child in Portland, OR. She later welcomed three more children in Oakland, CA, before moving to Philadelphia, PA. As a devoted single mother, Mai worked tirelessly to provide for and raise her four children with strength, resilience, and unconditional love.
One of Mai’s proudest accomplishments was purchasing her first home and finally settling in Tigard, Oregon — a dream she worked hard to achieve. She dedicated her life to giving her children love, support, and opportunity.
She found joy in cooking traditional Vietnamese dishes, especially her famous bún riêu, that was always requested by all her family members. She enjoyed gardening and nourishing her abundant thai chili peppers that she always loved sharing among her neighbors. Basketball was her favorite sport. She spent endless nights watching the Vietnamese musical variety show, Paris By Night. She enjoyed traveling to visit her children in Los Angeles, New York City, East Granby, and Atlanta. Her laughter, storytelling, and warm spirit brought comfort and happiness to everyone around her. She lived by the motto: “Live, Laugh, Love.”
In the final year of her life, Mai faced her illness with remarkable courage and determination. Her greatest wish was to live long enough to witness two milestones: the birth of her first grandchild and her son’s wedding this past March. Through her strength and perseverance, she was blessed to experience both while also studying very hard to receive her US citizenship which she received in December 2025.
Mai will be remembered for her resilience, generosity, humor, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her legacy of love and sacrifice will live on through all who knew and loved her.
She leaves to mourn her passing four children, Tommy Truong and his wife Janice, Davis Truong, Jennifer Nguyen and her husband Brian and Jessica Truong; their father, Hai Truong; her cherished granddaughter, Ariya Nguyen; her siblings, San, Lan, Huệ, Thanh and his wife Loan, Minh and his wife Ninh, Liên and her husband Thái, Tuấn, and Vân and her husband Phung; and several nieces and nephews.
