

Marian Neville Mahendran Manuel, affectionately known as Mahen, was born on November 2, 1950, in Sri Lanka to Joseph Edward and Joselyn Manuel. He was the second of five siblings, growing up with three sisters – Pushparani, Wijayarani, and Mari – and one brother, Devandran.
Mahen demonstrated early talent as a basketball player at St. Michael’s College in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka where he developed a lifelong passion for teamwork and sportsmanship.
His professional journey led him to a successful career at Unilever, where he excelled as a plant manager, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues. His dedication and leadership left a lasting impact on the company and those who worked alongside him, as he exemplified teamwork, positivity, and empathy in the workplace.
After retiring from a 34-year career at Unilever, Mahen moved to California in 2004, where he settled for 14 years. He later moved to Oregon, where he cherished spending his days surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
Mahen deeply enjoyed country music, especially music by Jim Reeves, and playing checkers. He displayed his sense of adventure by venturing out of his comfort zone and discovering new cuisines, learning about new cultures, and pursuing a life filled with continual learning and growth.
A beloved family man, Mahen is survived by his wife, Assumpta, and their two children, Dilani and Heshan. He cherished his role as a father-in-law to Ron and Archana, and as a grandfather to Anya, Aden, Davin, and Jaden. Mahen’s legacy of love extends to numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mahen passed away peacefully on October 24. 2024, at the age of seventy-three. He will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and the indelible mark he left on all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
A funeral service for Marian will be held Friday, November 1, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Finley Sunset Hills Mortuary, 6801 SW SUNSET HWY, PORTLAND, OR 97225.
