Milton Douglas McCarthy, 78, passed away peacefully in Portland, Oregon, on February 19, 2024. He was born on November 13, 1945, in Belton, Texas, and was adopted in 1951 by Joseph and Beverly McCarthy. The family moved several times with the Navy; they lived in Texas, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and eventually settled in San Bruno, California, for the majority of Milton's youth.
He graduated from Capuchino High School in San Bruno, CA, in 1964. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1965, serving as a combat Rifleman in Vietnam and receiving a Purple Heart for his service.
In 1968, he married his high school sweetheart, Clara J. McCarthy, and together they had two children, Paul and Pamela McCarthy. They built a home and raised their children in Medford, Oregon. As a Journeyman Machinist, he operated the steam plant at White City VA and Portland VA Hospital until his retirement in 1995.
Milton will be remembered for his love of his country, the animals he called his own—especially Bacchus, The Dukes, Stinky cat, and his faithful canine companion, Penny—and his skill at playing a competitive round of pool and cutthroat cribbage. He had a keen passion for nature, being an avid hiker, fisherman, game hunter, huckleberry, and mushroom gatherer. He was a devoted NASCAR and 49ers fan. He touched the lives of many friends over the years and remained in touch with many of them; he was a true loyal friend. Milton also had a keen sense of detail and backed it up with some amazing storytelling skills.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela J. McCarthy; his sisters, Catherine K. Carso, Sandra K. Harrison, Murl Marie Dawson-Linck; and a legacy carried forward by his nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Milton was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Beverly McCarthy; his wife, Clara J. McCarthy; his son, Paul D.McCarthy; and several siblings and a niece.
Milton will be buried with honors at The Willamette National Cemetery on March 11, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a small animal shelter of your choice.
