Nellie Mae Hunter

Nellie Mae Hunter was born in Oroville, California to Delocha J. Vaughn and Gladys Mae Francis Vaughn on May 13, 1949. Nellie was the baby girl of eight, but a force to be reckoned with. Nellie attended grade school as well as high school in Madera, California prior to residing in Portland, Or with her family in 1969. Nellie accepted Christ at a young age and attended Neighborhood Church of God with her family, where she met the love of her life, Carl Hunter in 1976. She was baptized by Reverend Archie Hunter in the 1980s. Carl and Nellie were united in marriage 46 years ago. Nellie worked in the industrial field, assembling military parts.

Papa said, “I saw your nana walking down the street and liked the way she walked.” And that is because she walked with confidence. Nellie was Bold and Beautiful, one of her favorite soap operas. In the same vein, she was Young and Restless. Nellie was Nana, a mother, a wife, a sister, aunt Nell, a friend, and overall, an outstanding lady. Nana and Papa would give you the shirts off their backs, welcoming you into their home. Remember, a golden heart stopped beating, small frail hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us… he only takes the best.

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents: Delocha Vaughn and Gladys Vaughn, Brothers: Sammy Vaugh, Jimmy Ray Vaughn Sr., and Andrew (Lump) Vaughn. Nellie leaves to cherish her memory: Her husband of 46 years Carl Hunter of Portland, OR., Daughters: Angelee Garrett and Robin Garrett both of Portland, OR., Grandchild: Marcus and Frances Johnson of Portland, OR., Dominique McDonald of Portland, OR., Cheyenne Carter of Seattle, WA., Chaniece Hall of Portland, OR., Chri’shawn West of Los Angeles, CA., India Gultry of Portland, OR., 16 Great Grandchildren, siblings: James Vaughn of Madera, CA., Willie Vaughn of Portland, OR., Eligha and Gloria Graham of Portland, OR., and Nora Vaughn of Portland, OR., as well as her bonus daughter Shelley Taylor and three grandchildren of Portland, OR., and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
