Paul Guillen Goodell died peacefully at home with his family on November 21, 2019. Paul was born to Margarita Guillen and David R. Goodell in Portland, Oregon, on August 2, 1942, the third of five sons, and resided his entire life in Oregon. He was 77 years old. He began school at Alameda before the family moved to Lake Oswego where he spent an active childhood swimming and playing football with his brothers, attended Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School and Lake Oswego High School. He served in the Oregon National Guard and graduated from the University of Oregon. He was an active member of the Catholic Church, attending various churches in the Portland area.
Paul married Janet Smith in Red Bluff, California, in 1965. Paul and Janet lived in Portland and raised four children. Paul was a longtime member of the Multnomah Athletic Club where he enjoyed swimming, boxing as a child, athletic events, and particularly tennis. He enjoyed all sports, but loved sailing: he sailed in the San Juan Islands, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and on the Columbia River. He and Janet loved to travel and visited Japan, Mexico, Europe, Hawaii, and Florida together and with family. Paul went on several trips with Tim King to Burma to help with a Catholic orphanage for young girls.
Paul worked in Casualty and Life Insurance before starting the Paul Goodell Agency. Later, he and Janet owned and operated numerous restaurants including Bud’s in Gearhart, Clementine’s in Portland, The Brass Horn in Hillsboro, Schooner Bay in Seaside and Cannon Beach. More recently, he was an entrepreneur and developed several properties in Seaside, Oregon, working closely with his son Brodie.
Paul’s greatest love was for his family and friends. Most of all, he loved being with his wife, children, and grandchildren, and he treasured the lifelong bond with his brothers, Osburn cousins, and their families.
Paul is survived by Janet, his loving wife of 54 years; daughter Sarah Ellen and husband Robert Giordano of Saratoga, California; son Paul Brodie and wife Mandy of Portland; son David Guillen and wife Ashley of Tillamook; daughter Lori Woods of Port Orchard, Washington; grandchildren Alexander, Mary Ellen, and Margarita Martinez, Paul Manny Serrador, and Kyle Giordano; grandchildren Lane and Mara Goodell, Liliana and Emilie Erickson; grandchildren Julia, Andrew, and Josiah Goodell; and granddaughter Stephanie Renfro; brothers Lane J.
