Phillip was born January 20, 1957, in Tacoma, Washington – along with his twin brother, Gilbert – the son of Frank Gordon McClain and Eunice Mae (Meredith) McClain.
He was a 1975 graduate of Forest Grove High School, and received a B.S. in Journalism from Oregon State University in 1980. After graduating from OSU, Phillip spent his entire professional career working in various roles for OSU Student Media, until his retirement in 2014.
After his retirement, Phillip relocated to Portland, Oregon. Throughout his adult life, he enjoyed collecting a variety of professional art work and visiting art museums and galleries. Phillip also enjoyed doing landscaping projects and attending concerts of his favorite musical artists.
Phillip was preceded in death by both parents and his twin brother, Gilbert.
He is survived by siblings Vera Suzanne Meredith of Marysville, Washington; Ronald Gordon McClain of Tucson, Arizona and Diane Marie Hatai of Fresno, California. Phillip had eight nieces and nephews.
