I had the pleasure of attending graduate school with Bob in Nashville, Tn back in the late 60’s.       Bob and another Oregonian, Dwight Burtus, traveled the 3000mi (one way) to Nashville for four summers participating in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) masters program.      I remember them driving up in Bob’s new, very red, Ford Mustang.       The three of us went to classes together, ate together,  studied together, and (because the air conditioner failed) lived together.       Back then, all NSF participants were required to live in the dorms.      When the air conditioning system broke down we convinced the university president, who was also our physics professor, to allow us to move to a private apartment complex...complete with swimming pool.       We had quiet a time over those four years.
