Born 1935, in Portland, OR to parents Louis F. & Genevieve E. Schulz. He attended Arleta Grad School & graduated from Franklin High School in Portland, OR. As a young man he developed a “donut delivery route”. He would go to different small businesses, take orders, ride his bike to the donut shop & then back to the customer with their order. Later, he worked with his mom in several restaurants including Oaks Park. While there, Bob learned to operate the carnival rides &learned to roller skate & became a “skate boy”. A skate boy was the person who took your shoe size & matched you up with the right skates. Bob became a member of the group who did skating production numbers for the entertainment of the spectators. His photo in the production number “Encore Cherie” located on the wall at the Oaks Skating Arena has been a source of amusement for decades.
In 1953 he decided to go to work for his father at Schulz Sanitary Svc. He later purchased the company & was a successful business owner. He worked long hard hours & his handshake was his bond. In 1954, he met the love of his life & future wife Rose at a Fraternal Youth Group function. They married in 1956 with family & friends in attendance. In 2006, when the celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, many of those same family & friends were there. In the first 4 years of their marriage, they were blessed with 2 daughters & a son & much later on 5 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Over the years, Bob & Rose worked side by side in the business and other endeavors. Bob led a full life with being a Boy Scout, a member of Milwaukie DeMolay, and then a Dad Advisor for many years where he received the DeMolay Legion of honor award. He was a member of the Milwaukie Elks and his kids loved that it had a swimming pool. He was a member of Milwaukie Masonic Lodge #109 where in Dec. 2001, he received the Hiram Award. In 2010, he became a duel member of Eculid Lodge, located in Prosser, WA, where his grandson Jay was Master. Bob was a member of the Scottish & York Rite & Al Kader Shrine. During his years as a Shriner, he was the first President of the Classic Cars Unit, was an aide/executive aide for approximately 10 years, drove for the Shriner Hospital and was a member of the Oriental Band. In 2011, he received the honor of being presented with “Ambassador Emeritus” by Al Kader Shriners.
His greatest love was his family, friends, God and Country. Bob has left a void that will never be filled. All who knew him well will miss him and carry him in their hearts forever. A Celebration of Life will be held sometime in June and a notice will be provided prior to the date. The family request that a donation to the Shriner Hospital Transportation Fund in his name be made rather than sending flower arrangements.
