Steven ‘Steve’ Robert Hennig was born the youngest of four children. Growing up in NW Portland, he graduated from Benson High School in 1974 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps the same year. He was proud of his career as a maintenance technician, retiring in 1996 after 22 years as the Chief of Motor Transportation with the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
After his retirement, Steve began work in the maintenance and repair service center with Roberson Motor Company in Salem, OR, where he worked for 13 years. His children would joke with him that he found a ‘second retirement job’ when he went to work for Home Depot at the receiving and dispatch center in Salem, retiring for his third and final time in 2018.
Steve was never one to sit still for long. In his younger years he participated in rodeo riding, where he excelled in bronc and bull riding competitions. He was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. Steve was happiest during retirement as a member of Skyline Grange #894 and working in his garden, where he was able to share the fruits of his labor with his family and the Portland Food Bank.
Steve is survived by his four children, Heather (Frank) Lane, James Roseler (Caitlin Bischoff), John Hennig, and Kelsi Hennig; his four grandchildren, Jake Lane, Brogan Lane, Indika Roseler, Olivia Roseler; his siblings Deanna Sanchez, Gary Hennig, Roanna (Doug) Rattay; and his nieces and nephews.
Steven Hennig will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery, with Military Honors to follow during a private graveside service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of Steve to the Oregon Food Bank at 7900 NE 33rd Portland, OR, 97211.
