Sue was raised in Taiwan and Tokyo, where she attended Kanda High School. She later attended Mt. Hood Community College when she was in the United States.
On March 17, 1952, Sue married serviceman Buford Wimberley in Yokohama, Japan. The couple came to Portland in 1955 for the first time, later settling in Portland in 1962.
Sue worked in multiple Japanese restaurants over the years and later as an office worker, retiring from Aetna Medicare in 1997. She was an active member of her community; volunteering at Ikoi-no Kai, a lunch program for Japanese Seniors. She was also a founding member of Transpacific Women’s Society (TWS), which was a group that helped Japanese war brides adjust to Portland and find community. She was proud of becoming a naturalized citizen.
In her spare time, Sue loved to garden. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking and traveling. She loved having flowers and color in her life! She was a strong, funny, proud, and resourceful woman.
Sue is survived by her daughters: Barbara Gallant, Susan (Pat) Givens, and Shirley Wimberley (Benn Curtis) and grandsons: Ross Givens, Rolland Wimberley, Ford Curtis, and Curtis Wimberley.
Donations in Sue’s name can be made to Ikoi-no Kai Lunch Program or Bento Delivery, 1333 SE 28th Ave., Portland, OR 97214.
