Tom was born on January 23, 1940, in San Diego, California to Bacil and Opal Wheatley. His daughter Elizabeth and his wife Isabel preceded him in death.
Tom was a 1958 graduate of Punahou High School. He enjoyed surfing and was a scratch golfer. Tom earned a 4th degree black belt in Judo and taught the sport to pay for college, graduating from the University of Idaho in 1963 with a degree in forestry and another degree in business management. In the same year, Tom married Isabel Jean Woods and received a naval commission, going on to serve three tours of duty in Vietnam as a line officer.
After leaving the Navy, Tom worked primarily in the forest management industry, and earned a master’s in finance and a doctorate in mathematics from Portland State University.
Tom is survived by his son Thomas, daughter-in-law Carmen, grandsons Michael and Matthew, and cat Samantha.
