

Violet lived most of her life in Portland. She grew up with three siblings and her widowed Mother during the Great Depression. Her siblings predeceased her. They were Glen R. Smith, Earl J. “Bud” Smith and Marvel W. Vaughn.
Violet was married on December 23, 1945 in Kodiak, Alaska to Charles H. Bishop. He was in the U.S. Navy and she worked for the Navy. He preceded her in death in 1995.
They were married for 50 years.
She retired from Portland Public Schools after spending her career as an elementary school secretary.
Vi was widely known for growing dahlias and loving flowers of all kinds. She also always had a soft touch for cats and dogs. She was fond of carrying dog food in the trunk of her car in case she saw any animals in need. She liked to give guidance to all those who needed it about the proper care of their dogs and cats.
She was also well known for loving and caring for any elderly people who appeared to have no one. She spent years running errands and doing favors for those in need.
She loved to sing with her husband, Charles. She directed the choir and played piano at the Community of Christ Church in Portland for many years.
Vi was the loving Mother to Charlie Bishop, of Camas, Washington and his wife Patti Bishop. She is also survived by granddaughters Renee Bishop, of San Diego, California and Amber Gibbon of Ashland, Oregon. She also had a great love for her great grandchildren Cedar M. Barnes and Esme R. Barnes of Ashland. Her nephews Glenn Vaughn of Vancouver, Washington and David Vaughn, of Portland, Oregon were also very close and supportive.
