

Mr. Daniel J. Hayes, age 85 of Rochester, NY and formerly of Potsdam and Massena, NY passed away Tuesday, September 26,, 2017, at Monroe Community Hospital in Rochester, NY. Visitation will be held at the funeral that day from 1pm until the the time of the service. A memorial service will then be held at the Garner Funeral Home on October 7th at 2pm with Rev. Rev. Stephen Rocker celebrant. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam. Online condolences can be shared @wwwgarnerfh.com. Dan was born on February 25, 1932, in Potsdam, NY, to the late Richard Hayes and Sara McCarthy. A graduate of Potsdam Central High School, he attended Canton ATC before receiving his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University. He later earned a master’s degree from St. Lawrence University. Dan served in the United States Army in 1955-56, and was a proud veteran. Dan was a history teacher at multiple high schools in New York State, the final one being Massena Central High School starting in the mid-1960s. In the early 1970s, Dan transitioned from teacher to guidance counselor at Massena Central, and worked in that position until his retirement in 1989. Dan married Sylvia “Sally” Doody on July 14, 1962, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Silver Springs, NY.
Dan is survived by his wife, Sylvia Hayes of Baldwinsville, NY; children Michael J. (Cosette) Hayes of Baltimore, MD, Sara (John) Dalton of Canandaigua, NY, Sheila (Michael) Heaton of Baldwinsville, NY, and Susan (Mark) Penhollow of Baldwinsville, NY; 8 grandchildren Margaret and Patrick Dalton, Matthew, Madeleine and Emma Heaton, Joseph Hayes, and Nora and Owen Penhollow; a sister, Joyce DelBalzo, along with several nieces and nephews. Daniel was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Barney, along with his brothers-in-law, Gene DelBalzo and George Barney.
