

Funeral service for Stefanie Tischler, 83, of Celebration, FL and formally of Potsdam, NY will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 10am at St. John the Baptist Church, Madrid, NY with Monsignor Harry Snow officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam immediately following the funeral.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Garner Funeral Home in Potsdam. Stefanie passed away Friday evening at her home in Florida with her family by her side.
Surviving are three sons: Reinhold Tischler (MaryAnn), Gerhard Tischler (Barbara) and Edward Tischler, all of Potsdam, a daughter Ingrid Tischler-DeTorres (Bill DeTorres) of Celebration, FL; grandchildren: Erika Ryerson, Kaeley Tischler, Alissa Tischler, Brendan Tischler, Alexis Tischler, Isabella DeTorres, Luca DeTorres, Zachary Debo, Matthew Debo, Emma Feinen; great-grandchildren: Harper, Madigan and Bruce. Stefanie was predeceased by her husband of over 60 years, Albin Tischler, and three sons: Roland, Arthur and Robert; three brothers: Josef Hassler, and two prior to her birth, three sisters: Olga Duciewicz, Gisela Gotsch and Eugenia Roliczek.
Mrs. Tischler was born on August 8, 1932 in Czernauca, Romania to the late Stefan and Maria Panczyszyn Hassler. She married Albin Tischler on November 19, 1949 in Linz, Austria. Stefanie began her career as a kindergarten teacher in Austria prior to coming to the United States in 1957. She became a proud citizen of the United States in 1968, along with her husband and two of their sons, Reinhold and Gerhard. Stefanie worked at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide and later became a Physical Therapy Aide at the hospital and then at Community Physical Therapy, before retiring. She moved to Florida in 2012.
Stefanie loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed dancing, gardening, cooking, traveling, and was a self-taught seamstress and upholsterer. In addition to working full-time, Stefanie and her husband devoted their lives to caring for their three sons afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy. The Prometheus Fraternity at SUNY Potsdam played a major role in assisting the family for almost twenty years. Stefanie and Albin made sure their door was always open for the fraternity brothers, their friends and neighbors.
