Violet “Vi” Cheney formally of Potsdam NY passed away Saturday, April 25, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Ogdensburg, NY where she had been a resident since 2012. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 29th at 11 am at the Garner Funeral Home in Potsdam with Rev. Lee Sweeney officiating. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 28 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Parishiville.
Vi is survived by a daughter Nancy (Ronnie) Robert of Colton and a son Duane (Suzann) Cheney of Potsdam; a sister Beatrice Whitmore of Los Angeles, California; grandchildren Brian (Janelle) Robert, Jeffery (Amy) Robert, Regina (Travis) Caswell, Kayla (Jan) Merchant and Cassandra Cheney: great-grandchildren Taylor, Brianna, Kayden, Alyssa, Connor, Brooke, Alexa, Cassie, Adrianna and Amelia along with many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cheney was predeceased by a brother Carl Froats and a sister Gladys Lawrence.
Mrs. Cheney was born on November 23, 1928 in Norfolk to the late Earl and Fern Pemberton – Froats. She graduated from Massena Central. On July 17, 1948 Vi married Douglas H. Cheney in Massena at the United Methodist Church. Mr. Cheney passed away in 1981. She worked for ALCOA from 1946 to 1950. She then became a stay at home mom. Later Vi went to work for Greyhound Bus Line for five years retiring in 1981. Vi was a member of the West Stockholm Fireman’s Auxiliary and the West Stockholm Methodist Church. Vi loved to play cards, listen to music, and she loved to dance. Vi liked to entertain people and was known for her great cooking.
