Albert Solmonson, 78, of Prince George, British Columbia, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, at the Prince George Rotary Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family and the sounds of George Jones — one of his favorite country singers.
Albert was born on October 27, 1946, in Prince George, BC--the first child of Leonard and Olive Solmonson. As the eldest of seven children, he learned early the value of hard work, responsibility, and family.
He married Vickey McCabe with whom he shared 53 years of laughter, joy, sadness and home life. Together they raised a son and two daughters. While Albert worked in camps between Mossville mill until it shut down and Takla logging, Vicky was the Brown Owl of the Glenview Brownie Pack on The Hart when she wasn't gardening and raising their youngest. They'd move to Hixon BC in 1998 to enjoy the slow country life, then move back to Prince George in 2019 to be closer to family and health care resources.
Albert worked as a logger from the age of 14; a career that reflected his strength and dedication. Away from work, his passion was Ford trucks. He loved to buy, repair, and trade them--always searching for the next project or the perfect deal. He bought his first car at 14. He had a natural tinkerer's touch and could fix nearly anything with a steady hand and a few colorful words.
A man of simple joys, Albert loved classic country music, sharing drinks and stories with friends and family and spending time in the country he cherished so deeply. He often said that in another life, he would have loved to gold pan and mine, drawn to the quiet promise of the land.
Albert was also a familiar face at the Salvation Army thrift stores, where he enjoyed the hunt for good books — especially those about homesteading and the old ways of life. His loyal companion, a small black maltipoo named Binky, was his favorite dog and a constant source of joy.
He is survived by his three children, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; who will forever remember his plaid jacket and ball cap, his stories and his steadfast presence. Albert was predeceased by his parents, wife Vickey and great granddaughter Islay.
Albert’s family takes comfort in knowing he is now reunited with his loved ones and at peace in the country he loved so well. His country spirit and sense of humor will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
SPECIAL THANKS from his and Vicky's family to the wonderful Homecare staff and their youngest daughter Megan for their years of dedication and love to both of their care that allowed them to remain home in their twilight years; each spending only a handful of days in hospice before transitioning in their journey.
In lieu of a Celebration of Life or flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Prince George Rotary Hospice House or the SPCA in Albert's memory. The care he and Vicky received in their final days, as well as their love for animals, will be fondly remembered.
