It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of Doreen Wilson, peacefully at home with her beloved husband, Jack, and daughters Lana and Laura by her side, on the evening of October 20, 2026.
Dora, as she was called, was born in Calahoo, Alberta, on May 11, 1943, to parents Mabel and Albert Heer. When Albert was transferred with Swanson Lumber from Alberta to Hixon, the family travelled by train to their new home in Hixon.
It was in Hixon where she met Jack Wilson, who would become her husband on May 11, 1963, her birthday! Daughters Lana and Laura were born in the next few years. It was here that they grew their family in the house on the hill.
Dora worked seasonally for 35 years at the Red Rock tree nursery, supplying seedlings to many tree planters. The work was hard and difficult; it was here that she made lifelong friends.
Dora and Jack lived happily in the house on the hill for 50 years before building a new home and moving to Prince George in 2012.
Dora was a big Bingo fan and could be found at the bingo hall most Saturdays. She and Jack made quite a few trips to Reno over the years. Her last casino trip was to Vegas with her daughter, Laura, where they had the pleasure of seeing Andrea Bocelli perform.
In 2016, they completed a trip across Canada in their truck and camper, stopping at all the places they wanted to see. They were able to spend time with relatives in Ontario and did a great deal of visiting and sightseeing. One of Dora’s memorable stops was visiting the Terry Fox National Historic Monument outside of Thunder Bay. It was amazing to see. They went all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, filling up on seafood along the way. Dora filled up a bottle with the good Atlantic Ocean water to bring home.
Being a baseball family, on the way home they stopped to catch a Blue Jays game in Toronto. Everyone being baseball fans, they travelled with Lana for 3 glorious days of baseball and enjoyed Seattle.
Dora could remember players from years ago. She was able to see the Blue Jays' flyout this season, much to everyone’s disappointment.
Dora loved live entertainment of any kind. She and Jack travelled to many places for concerts and plays, including ABBA, Adele, Bryan Adams (a few times), Fiddler on the Roof, Shen Yun, Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, and many more.
In 1979, Dora surprised Lana and Laura with a weekend trip to Vancouver to see the Bee Gees. It was a weekend to remember, being filled with fun and the odd pitcher of sangria.
Dora and Jack loved the cruise life. Life on the ships offered live entertainment, wonderful meals, a chance to really dress up, and, of course, exciting ports of call. They travelled on 14-plus cruise ships, cruising to Asia, South America, Australia, and Europe. Cruising opened their eyes to a whole new world. On Holland America’s private island, Half Moon Cay, Dora even went parasailing there! They travelled through the Panama Canal twice.
For their 50th wedding anniversary, they sailed the Mediterranean and renewed their wedding vows with the captain of the ship and friends they made along the way. The pictures are spectacular.
We are so lucky to have many pictures from over the years to remember.
In the past 2 years, medical issues arose, and Dora spent a great amount of time in the hospital, never complaining, just taking it all in stride.
When she came home in April, Jack took over caring for her, from cooking, cleaning, and laundry to everything else she needed. Jack said, "She took care of me for years; it’s my time to look after her." They were married for 63 years and had a great life together. It was her wish to pass away at home, and we are grateful we could honour this request.
Doreen is survived by her loving husband, Jack; daughters Lana and Laura; and much-treasured granddaughter Miranda, whom Grandma loved so very much. Miranda was able to spend a few days with her grandparents, and they were so pleased.
Doreen was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Mabel; sister Marie; and brothers Peter, Raymond, Ken, and John.
Mom has been cremated. There will be no service, at her request. She will rest at the Prince George Memorial Park Mausoleum.
At this time, the family would like to thank the paramedics and firemen who attended our home on several occasions. We would also like to thank the emergency room nurses and doctors and the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia for the care and respect shown to Doreen. To the lab techs, the porters, the techs who run the CT and MRI scans, and the X-ray department, we thank you for your kindness.
To the nurses and doctors on Surgery North, we thank you for caring for Mom so well. To the care aides, you are all angels. Thank you for treating Mom with so much compassion and respect. To the cleaning department, who always took a little extra time to chat with Mom, we thank you! To the kitchen staff and meal transporters, you are amazing. To the social workers in emergency and on the 3rd floor, thank you for everything!
To our long-term doctor, Dr. Liam Higgins, and our new doctor, Dr. Marwa Alaswad, we thank you for the care and devotion you have shown us during this difficult time.
We would especially like to thank Dr. Kit Moran, orthopedic surgeon extraordinaire, who took Mom’s complicated case and took his time to figure out the best way to help her. She just adored Dr. Moran. Thanks to you and Michael Moran for giving us 10 more months with Mom. You will be forever in our hearts. Thanks also to Dr. John Black for his care.
We would like to thank the care aids from Optimum Home Care Inc. who took such good care of Mom when she first came home!
To the home care team at Northern Health that took over when more care was needed, we thank the dedicated nurses and exceptional care aids who were here for us.
When Mom became palliative, the palliative nurses and care aids took over. We can say nothing but good things. Thank you and your whole team. Everyone took time to explain what was happening, no matter how many times we asked. Everyone treated Mom and our family with kindness, caring, and respect! You will not be forgotten!
To the men from Assman’s who came to get Mom, you were so gentle and respectful of our mom and our family. Thank you for that. Thank you to Assman’s for helping us with the arrangements. A very special thank you to Jennifer for taking such good care of our mom. She looked so beautiful and at peace. And a special thank you to Randi and Angela for helping me!
We would also like to thank the visitors at the hospital and at home. Mom enjoyed your company so much.
In lieu of flowers, please visit a friend, give someone a compliment, or just call a friend and say hello.
We will miss you!
