Harjit Kaur Nijjar was born on October 18, 1948, in Athola, Punjab, India. She lived a life deeply rooted in love, seva, and faith in Sikhi, guided by unwavering devotion to her family and community. She passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, in her home in Prince George, British Columbia, surrounded by her family and held in chardi kala, at the age of 77.
She is lovingly reunited with her beloved husband, Avtar Singh Nijjar, who predeceased her. Together, they built a life grounded in resilience, humility, and Sikh values while raising their family in Powari, Punjab, within a large extended family who also regarded her as a mother figure.
In 1993, Harjit immigrated with her family to Abbotsford, British Columbia, later settling in Prince George the same year, where they began building their life in Canada. She worked tirelessly in berry farms and multiple jobs, always placing her family’s wellbeing above her own while extending her care to her grandchildren, many of whom she helped raise.
Coming from a proud farming lineage, Harjit maintained a deep connection to the land throughout her life. She found joy in her garden, nurturing it with patience and love, and often shared its fruits generously with others.
Deeply devoted to her faith, Harjit attended the Gurdwara approximately four to six times a week, where she found strength, peace, and spiritual grounding in Sikhi. She was also often called upon as a trusted mediator at the Gurdwara, helping resolve concerns and bring people together with fairness, calmness, and compassion.
Harjit loved the simple things in life that, to her, were the biggest joys. She found deep gratitude in everyday moments and was especially joyful in outings such as going to stores, coffee shops, and enjoying ice cream with her son’s children, her grandchildren, Jobanvir and Harsimran. These simple experiences brought her immense happiness. She often looked forward to drives and spending time together, cherishing the conversations shared, the laughter, and the comfort of simply being with family.
She is lovingly remembered by her siblings and her five children: her son, Amarjit Nijjar, and his wife Harpreet Nijjar; and her four daughters, Charnjit Varaich and her husband Parmjit Varaich; Manjit Khaira and her husband Harpal Khaira; Rajwinder Gill and her husband Harjinder Gill; and Balwinderjit Bal and her husband Rajkamal Bal.
She was a devoted grandmother to Harsimran Nijjar and Jobanvir Nijjar, Sarandeep Dhaliwal, Jaspreet Gill, Raman Atwal, Gurik Varaich, Jasmeen Khaira, Parmeen Khaira, Harpreet Khaira, Gaven Gill, Harman Gill, Karandeep Bal, and Manaik Bal, many of whom were raised under her care and experienced her unconditional love, wisdom, humour, and guidance. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Aveer Gill and Arzoyi Gill.
Beyond her immediate family, Harjit was a mother, grandmother, sister, mentor, and guiding light to countless bonus children, grandchildren, extended family members, neighbours, and friends across the world. Her home was always open, and no one who entered ever left without food, laughter, comfort, and care. She welcomed all regardless of race, culture, gender, ethnicity, or background, embodying the Sikh principles of seva (selfless service), sarbat da bhala (welfare of all), humility, and compassion as taught through the Guru Granth Sahib. She lived her life guided by the three foundational pillars of Sikhi: Naam Japna, Kirat Karni, and Vand Chakna.
Harjit was known for her honesty, strong voice, and transparency, and she was never afraid to speak her mind with truth and conviction. She was deeply respected in both her village and her community in Canada, and her presence left a lasting impression on all who knew her, creating a long-lasting impact that will continue to be felt for generations to come.
Her legacy is one of unconditional love, selfless service, and unwavering faith. She will be remembered not only as a mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, but as a pillar of her community whose life touched countless hearts.
Harjit also expressed deep appreciation, love, and blessings toward the UHNBC staff, home care staff, and hospice team. She would always wish them well and offer her blessings in return for their kindness and care. The family is deeply grateful for the service providers and medical staff for the compassionate care, dignity, and support provided to Harjit during her time of need. They extend heartfelt appreciation and send blessings to all those who supported her, wishing them continued success and strength in their endeavours.
