It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joanne Grier, age 87, our beloved and cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin on Monday, December 16th, 2024.
Mom was born in Duncan B.C. on August 11th, 1937. She was the third and youngest child of Theo and Faye Grier. She spent her early years in Youbou, B.C. before moving with her family to Victoria where she attended Mt Douglas High Secondary School.
Mom married and welcomed four children before leaving Vancouver Island to head north. In December 1964, the family moved to Prince George where they were greeted by sub zero temperatures and a blowing snowstorm. Mom was initially less than impressed. But, after settling in and adding two more children to the family, Prince George proudly became home for the rest of her life.
After becoming a single parent, mom provided for her children by working simultaneously at His and Hers Hair Salon and the local Adult Education, then later at CNC. Mom was well respected, skilled and a conscientious, dedicated employee. She took great pride in her work life.
Education was important to mom, as she continued to take courses throughout her life. She was particularly proud to earn her adult GED while working to support her family.
Mom made an impact in the community through her many volunteer roles. She also generously gave to many charities close to her heart, especially her beloved SPCA.
Mom was happiest walking her dogs, first Brie, then Belle and spending time with her children as well as her grandchildren and great-grand children to whom she was affectionately known as Grandma Jo and GG Jo.
Mom lived life on her own terms and was fiercely independent. Her strength and courage helped her persevere through many health challenges, particularly those in the last year and a half of her life. She will be dearly missed.
Mom is survived by her six children: Debbie (Larry), Tom, Tony, Tim, Patti (Kevin) and Laurie, 13 grand children and 7 great-grand children as well as her older brother, Boyd (Barbara), 2 nephews, a great-niece, and 2 cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA, BCSPCA, the Salvation Army and/or the Hospice House.
There is no formal service of remembrance planned at this time in lieu of the family wishing to hold a private celebration of life at a later date.
Love you, mamma! You will be so, so missed.
