It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Leila Branisel, age 91. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, at UHNBC in Prince George, British Columbia, on September 18, 2026.
Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, in 1935, she was the only child of Finnish immigrants, Einar and Tekla Arffman. Growing up in Northern Ontario, she inherited a strong sense of resilience and cultural pride. Pursuing a passion for helping others, Leila moved to the city and graduated in 1956 from nursing school in Toronto.
The year 1965 marked a beautiful turning point in her life. She married her husband, John, in Kirkland Lake, and they made the adventurous move across the country to Prince George. Together, they built a life and a loving family in British Columbia. Though she settled in the west, Leila never forgot her roots, and dear friends in Ontario, faithfully keeping in touch with them over the miles and decades through long phone calls and Christmas cards.
Leila lived a life rich in deep passions. She was a woman of sharp intellect and gentle warmth, known for her profound love of reading—especially books about health, biographies, and cookbooks—and all music, but especially classical. An avid protector of the vulnerable, Leila had a deep affection for animals and cared for many cherished pets. She also found immense joy in food, a good cup of coffee, and an ice-cold Coke. Her independent spirit, kindness, and appreciation for life's daily joys will be deeply missed.
Leila is survived by her loving children, Byron and Holly (Doug Hofstede); her five cherished grandchildren, Kristyn (Matt Egan), Megan, Jakob (Emily Botham), Ethan, and Finn; her sister-in-law, Sylvia Stark; her nephews, David and John Henry; and her Finnish nieces, Leena and Marja. She leaves behind some amazing friends and great neighbors who brought immense joy, comfort, and companionship to her life over the years.
She was reunited in peace with those who predeceased her: her beloved husband John; her daughter-in-law,Cheryl; her parents Einar and Tekla; her brother-in-law,John; and her nieces Paula and Susan.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at UHNBC for their compassionate care. A Celebration of Leila’s Life will be held at Trinity United Church on November 14 at 10:00 am.
