In Loving Memory of Our Beautiful Mother, Martha Shepherd

May 1, 1933 – September 14, 2026 (93 years old)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Martha Shepherd, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Martha was born on May 1, 1933, in Arran, Saskatchewan to William (Bill) Sawchuk and Anne Sawchuk. Proud of her Ukrainian heritage, she carried the strength, resilience and traditions of her family throughout her life. As the eldest of four children, Martha shared a special bond with her siblings Johnny (Shirley), Alice (Curly) and Sylvia (Joe).

Family was at the centre of Martha's life. She was married to Alexander (Al) Vincent Gallis and later to Malcolm Vernon Shepherd, sharing many years of life's joys and challenges with them while primarily residing in Kamloops, British Columbia. She was a devoted mother to Dale (Suzanne), William (Bill) (Marilyn), Sheryll (Dwight), Terry (Ada) and Kelly (Chris). Her family was her greatest pride and the focus of her life's work.

Martha was an exceptional cook and baker whose kitchen was often the heart of family gatherings. She was especially known for making the very best homemade perogies and beetaroonies, traditions she lovingly shared with her family. Whether feeding a crowd or preparing a favourite meal, Martha's cooking brought comfort, connection, and countless cherished memories. Her warm hospitality ensured that no one ever left her home hungry.

Beyond her love of cooking, Martha enjoyed dancing, curling, gardening and spending time with the many lifelong friends she treasured. She found joy in simple pleasures, meaningful conversations and the company of those she loved most.

She was a proud and loving grandmother to Joshua, Alexander, Justin (Kari), Deanna, Robin, Amanda, Tyler (Sara), Willow (Levi) and Gino (Jenna). Martha was also blessed to be a great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother to Taylor, Emerson, Kai, Jaxon, Roman and Matteo--each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.

Martha will be remembered for her strength, generosity, devotion to family and unwavering love for those around her. Her legacy lives on through the generations she nurtured, the traditions she passed down and the countless memories shared by family and friends.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and residents of Riverbend Manor and Simon Fraser Lodge in Prince George, as well as the dedicated Northern Health Community Nurses, whose care, kindness and companionship meant so much to Martha and her family.

Though our hearts are saddened by her passing, we take comfort in knowing that the love, strength, wisdom and traditions she shared will continue to guide us. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
