With family by his side and surrounded by love, Terry Akerley passed away peacefully at home on October 20, 2026. Terry was born in St. Leonard, New Brunswick on February 2, 1943 to parents Harry and Simone Akerley. His family later moved west to Port Alice, BC where Terry grew up alongside his four siblings. As a young man, he threw himself into a bit of everything, playing softball, scuba diving, working on classic cars and later earning a brown belt in Judo.
He began a trade as a Machinist in Port Alice and in 1966 a quick trip though Prince George, BC on his way to visit family turned into the start of a new chapter. Stopping in to check out the new pulp mill, Terry was hired on the spot and stayed for 39 years as a Machinist and Millwright. During those decades at Canfor, he became a true mentor to everyone as he was a natural teacher who was always ready to lend a hand whenever anyone needed it.
After moving to Prince George, Terry met his future wife, Helen. They were married in 1969 and went on to raise three children Tara, Tina and Chad.
To his friends and family, he was known as a true jack-of-all-trades and was the first person anyone called when they needed a hand. He was endlessly inventive and resourceful--helping with countless family projects over the years, most notably, the building of his daughter Tina’s home. Truthfully, there was not a problem he could not solve and everyone knew they could count on him to figure it out. Above all, Terry was a pillar and a role model for the many children in his life. He helped raise and guide generations from his own children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren to the many daycare kids Helen cared for over the years.
Terry was predeceased by his beloved daughter Tina. He is survived and remembered by his wife Helen; his children Tara (Bill) and Chad (Emily); grandchildren Tyler (Julia), Matthew (Gemma), Emma, Jake, Sam and Tyson; his sister Dee along with extended family and friends. No service will be held, at Terry’s request.
