Walter was born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan on June 22, 1936 to Phillip and Pauline Rommel. He worked in the lumber industry most of his life, retiring in Prince George, BC, and then moving to Mackenzie in 2010. He married his wife Sonja in 1958 and raised four children along with multiple foster children.
