On March 2, 2026, with his son Dean at his side, Wendell left this earth to join his heavenly wife Sophie’s waiting arms. Predeceased by Sophie in July 2024 and his parents, Elmer and Elida and older brothers Jim, Henry and Laurence, Wendell is survived by Dean, daughter in law Kim, granddaughter Amanda, grandson Brandon and great granddaughter Rowen, along with daughter Shannon and son in law Gerald Girard.
Wendell grew up on the family farm in Dewberry, Alberta. He met Sophie in Edmonton and moved their young family to Surrey and then Prince George, BC where they lived the last 50 plus years. He worked for a number of plumbing, heating and sheet metal companies, last employed with Wolseley retiring in 2002. Many hiking, fishing, camping, canoeing, kayaking and road trips in his little black Suzuki filled his days. Sophie was known to drag him on holidays to Cuba, Florida, Hawaii, and Mexico with Wendell convincing her to hike the West Coast Trail as payback. Wendell enjoyed the Pidherny trails and would walk for hours on end through the bush. Even when dementia hit him, he knew the trails well enough to find his way home (occasionally having to ask for directions).
After Sophie’s passing, Wendell was loved by his ladies at Comfort Keepers and the kind hospital staff on the PMCU ward who cared for him since August 2025. He looked forward to trouble he and “bonus” daughter Heather would find when she visited regularly. Wendell was scheduled to move into a senior care home when he developed pneumonia and passed away within a week. He lived a full life with no regrets.
Wendell was loved by all his family and was everyone’s favorite uncle. His shenanigans and smiling face will be missed. He can now complete that heavenly Canada cross country trip in a truck and camper he and Sophie always planned to take (but with a flushing toilet!)
This spring the family will take Wendell to his favorite fishing/camping site along the Crooked River where he will join Sophie and float down the river once again.
Any donations can be made in Wendell’s memory to the Cancer society.
