William Kenneth Shane, known to most as Bill or Billy, was born on November 11, 1936, in Vegreville, Alberta. He passed away on May 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, laughter, and deep love for his family and the outdoors.
Bill attended school in Alberta until Grade 9 before striking out on his own at a young age. His journey took him first to Athabasca and later to Golden, British Columbia, where he began building the life and career he would become proud of.
A highly skilled and dedicated truck driver, Bill was known for his ability to safely haul anything from logs to fuel and asphalt for road paving. He especially loved lowbedding and took great pride in his work, even successfully moving entire paving plants himself—no small feat, often requiring multiple trips and careful planning.
Bill is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Ann; his stepdaughters, Sherri (Ken), Cindy (Blake), and Tracey (Steve); and his “adopted” son, Craig (Marla). He also leaves behind three grandsons, three granddaughters, four great-grandchildren, and many extended family members who cherished him.
Outside of work, Bill had a strong connection to the outdoors. Camping, hunting, and fishing were traditions he looked forward to each year. He had a love for speed and powerful engines and taught himself to operate and repair nearly every piece of equipment he encountered. He was never one to shy away from a challenge and took great pride in figuring things out on his own.
Bill was immensely proud of his home and spent countless hours caring for his yard, creating a space where family could gather. He especially enjoyed sitting by the fire, watching the kids, birds and squirrels.
He had a soft spot for animals, and his loyal dog Jake was always by his side. Bill took great joy in watching the wildlife that passed through the property, even when the neighbors’ horses stopped by for a visit.
Generous with his time and knowledge, Bill was always ready to lend a hand to a friend in need. One of his greatest gifts was his sense of humor—he loved making people laugh and brought joy to those around him.
A celebration of life will be held on July 4, 2026, at 2pm at the Hart Pioneer Centre.
Bill will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
