Born August 23, 1927 in Cornbeard Ridge, WV she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Alice (Quesenberry) Maxey. Betty worked at several different jobs in order to put herself through nursing school at Bluefield WV’s St. Luke’s Hospital.
After graduating nursing school as a Registered Nurse, she became the supervisor in the newborn nursery at St. Luke’s Hospital, from 1948-1951. In June of 1949, she married the love of her life, Robert L. “Bob” Carrico Jr. Shortly thereafter, she and her husband moved to Charleston, WV. There she became the head nurse of the newborn nursery at Charleston Memorial Hospital; now known as Charleston Area Medical Center.

During that time, she also worked at Wyoming General Hospital in the outpatient department as an emergency room and doctor’s office nurse.
In 1966, she became a public health nurse with the Wyoming County Health Department and went on to retire from there after twenty-one years of service. During her time there, she helped many people with family planning and gave thousands of immunizations and vaccinations to eradicate infectious diseases. After retiring she and her husband enjoyed renovating her husband’s childhood home in Lake Shawnee, WV; where they have lived since 1987.
Betty had many other passions that included: sewing, gardening, going to flea markets, attending auctions and estate sales; always searching for unique antiques that she thoroughly enjoyed restoring and displaying in her home.
