He was the beloved husband of the late Loretta A. (Caldarone) Smith. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage until Loretta’s death in 2006. Born in Providence on October 25, 1930, he was the son of the late Jesse K. and Euphemia (Donovan) Smith.
Al was a retired truck driver and a member of the Teamsters Local 251 until his retirement from Yellow Freight. He proudly retired with 3 million miles of safe driving recorded and was awarded Rookie of the Year in 1967.
Al was a multi-sport athlete as a young man and well into his adult years. He managed the RI Diplomats, a semi-pro basketball team, had the opportunity to scout with Providence College, and dedicated himself to coaching, and guiding many young men in his Warwick community. He coached with great passion and always encouraged good sportsmanship.
He was a huge fan to all of our many New England teams, whether pro or college, he cheered them on with great enthusiasm. Al had the pleasure of golfing and fishing with Ted Williams while in Florida.
Al loved Tiger Woods .In 1995, he won the U.S. Amateur golf championship in Newport. Al was a marshal and had the opportunity to spend quality time with his dad Earl Woods. Tiger was kind enough to sign a ball for him prior to turning pro.
Al and Loretta traveled to Florida for several years, where they enjoyed the warmth and golfing at Seven Lakes in Ft. Meyers. He went on to continue that tradition every year and at the age of 87, he once again drove himself to Ft. Meyers to enjoy what would be his last winter as a snowbird. While at home in R.I., Jamestown Golf Course was their favorite place to play. It was there that Al proudly achieved a hole in one.
He was a very strong willed man facing many of life’s challenges with courage and great determination. He was fearless, believed in working hard, always looked toward the future, and always maintained a great sense of humor. He was loved and will truly be missed.
Al is survived by his sons, Alfred and William, and his daughter Sheila Cicerchia of Warwick. He is now joined in heaven with his youngest son James, who passed away in 2002. He also leaves many cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition, he leaves his brothers, Kenneth Smith of Lincoln, Robert Smith of Nevada, and his baby sister, Doris Senecal-Gildea of California, along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and burial were private.
