

North Providence Austin Patrick Coyne, 87, of Douglas Avenue, died peacefully Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Born in South Providence, a son of the late Patrick and Sabina (Duffy) Coyne, he lived in the city most of his life. Austin worked in the Records Bureau of the Providence Police Department for many years before retiring in 1987. A gentle man, and a gentleman, he was held in high esteem by his many friends and colleagues within the department. Mr. Coyne served his country proudly in the United States Army during WW II. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy and Bryant College, and was a longtime communicant, and usher, at Saint Pius V Church, Providence. Active in many civic and charitable organizations throughout his life, Austin was particularly proud to belong to the Irish Ceilidhe Club of Rhode Island, the Providence Fraternal Order of Police, the Retired Providence Police and Firefighters Association and the Columban Mission Guild. He was always very generous to many children's charities as well. He leaves two nieces, Mary Ellen Coyne and Constance A. Masi; five nephews, John M. Coyne, Gregory Dunn, Thomas A. Coyne, Gerald J. Coyne and Robert P. Coyne; sixteen great nieces and great nephews; and a great great nephew. He was a brother of the late John J. Coyne, Thomas J. Coyne, M. Mary Dunn and Augustine Coyne. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, at 10:00 am, in Saint Pius V Church, Eaton Street, Providence, to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial, with military honors, will be in Saint Mary Cemetery, West Warwick. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
