

NARRAGANSETT -- McClanaghan, Catherine J., 90, of Coffey Avenue, died peacefully on Tuesday evening at her residence in Point Judith. She was the wife of the late Robert W. McClanaghan. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Daniel F. and Nora M. (Phillips) Farrelly, she had lived in Providence most of her life, and had summered in Point Judith for the past fifty three years. Mrs. McClanaghan was an elementary school teacher at the former Nelson Street School, now the Robert F. Kennedy School, Providence, for thirty years, retiring in 1980.She was the second female member of the Rhode Island State Police Department, assigned Badge # 87. She served from 1943 to 1946 under the late Col. Edward J. Kelly.Catherine was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament School, Saint Xavier Academy, and Rhode Island College of Education, now Rhode Island College. She was a member of the Saint Xavier Alumna Association, and the Rhode Island College Alumni Association. She was a member of the Providence Teachers Union, the American Federation of Teachers, and the Providence College Friars Front Court Club. Catherine and her late husband Bob were season ticket holders for P.C. basketball since 1954. Catherine was a long time communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, where she received five of her seven Sacraments, and was also a communicant of Saint Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Narragansett. She leaves two sons; Robert W. McClanaghan, Peter T. McClanaghan, (Ret. Sgt. South Kingstown Police Department) both of Narragansett, two daughters; Jane M. Robinson of Narragansett, Catherine M. Cowen of Wickford, seven grandchildren, and many cousins, including Eileen M. Farrelly, and Rev. Owen F. Goodwin, ss.cc., and also many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Daniel F. McClanaghan, and sister of the late Reverend Peter T. Farrelly, S.J., Daniel F. Farrelly, and Mary F. Cauchon. The funeral will be held Saturday, at 9:30 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Academy Avenue, Providence. Burial will be in Saint Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours Friday, 4 - 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Blessed Sacrament School, 240 Regent Avenue, Providence, RI 02908 in her memory will be appreciated.
