

CranstonColonel Christopher J. Hanley, Jr., D.D.S., of Belvedere Drive, Cranston, died peacefully on November 24, 2008 at Hallworth House. He was the husband of Mary Jane (Lyons) Hanley. Born in Providence on August 20, 1928, he was a son of the late Christopher and Margaret (Devine) Hanley. Dr. Hanley served in the United States Army for two years in Nuremberg, Germany, as Chief of Dental Service in the 87th Medical Detachment, Dental Service. He then was Chief of Dental Service for the 804th Hospital Center at Hanscom Air Force Base, and the 455th General Hospital in Warwick RI for twenty eight years, retiring from active Army Reserve with the rank of Colonel. Dr. Hanley graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1946 and Providence College in 1950 with a B. S. in Biology. He graduated from The University of Maryland Dental School in 1954 with a D.D.S. Degree. He was a charter member of the Pawtuxet Valley Rotary Club. He was a past President of The Kent County Dental Association, a member of the RI Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. Dr. Hanley was a member of the dental staff of Kent County Memorial Hospital. He served as a lector at The Immaculate Conception Church in Cranston, where he was a communicant for 45 years. He was a member of Post 1 of the American Legion and the Rhode Island Irish Ceilidhe Club. Dr.Hanley was a manager and Coach in the Cranston Western Little League. Dr. Hanley practiced dentistry in West Warwick with his now deceased brother, Dr. Robert D. Hanley of Warwick for 48 years. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Jane (Lyons) Hanley. He also leaves his son Kevin C. and his wife Kathleen (Gillerlane) of Cranston, his son Paul F. of Dallas, TX, daughters Mary G. of Cranston and Kathleen M. Perreault and her husband Michael of Saunderstown, son Brian P. and his wife Amanda (Huling) of Cranston, son Christopher J. also of Dallas, TX, and grandchildren, Kate, Alexander and Jack Perreault, Ailis, Fiona and Kevin Hanley, Samuel, Maclean, Declan and Rowan Hanley. He was an avid Providence College basketball fan, having season tickets for 51 years. He enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting activities, spending time with family and friends, and traveling. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at 8:30am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road (Rt. 117) Warwick. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Immaculate Conception Church, Oaklawn Ave, Cranston. Burial, with military honors, will be in Saint Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-8pm.
