

Edmund G. Skeffington, Sr., 93, of Providence, died Monday, January 16, 2012 at the Miriam Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of the late Helen (Swanson) Skeffington, Arline (Farrell) Skeffington and Ruth (Miller) Skeffington.Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Peter J. and Mary T. (Glennon) Skeffington.Edmund was an Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Administration for many years before his retirement.He served in WWII as a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Force. He flew the B-17 and was a member of the 301st Bombardment Group, and the 352nd Bombardment Squadron. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Distinguished Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He was a life member of the DAV and the American Legion. He was an officer of the Army of the United States Reserve Corps. He was a well known Jazz pianist and was associated with the Drew/Corcoran agency for many years. He was a lifetime member of the American Federation of Musicians and also a member of the Soaring Society of America. He is survived by three sons, Edmund G. Skeffington, Jr. of Old Town, ME, Robert F. Skeffington of Peru, ME and Michael S. Skeffington of Florida; two daughters, Jean P. Skeffington of East Windsor, CT, and Kathleen A. Ollivier of Minneapolis, MN; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was a brother of the late Helen Balcom, Mary E. Doyle, Kathleen S. Doherty, William G., Francis X, and Peter J. Skeffington, Jr. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 10:00am in the Cathedral of SS. Peter & Paul, Cathedral Square, Providence to which relatives and friends are cordially invited. Burial, with military honors, will be in Saint Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
