
KATZ, DR. JOSEPH, 96, died July 4, 2012. He was the husband of Cecilia (Stein) Katz. Born in Ukraine, the son of the late David Tzvi and Sarah (Shusterman) Katz, he was raised in Cuba before coming to the US in 1930. A graduate of Yale University (Phi Beta Kappa) and the University of Iowa (Sigma Xi), Dr. Katz was a bio-chemist at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital for 27 years, retiring in 1985. He served in the US Army during WWII serving in North Africa, Europe and Japan. Dr. Katz was a member of the American Academy of Clinical Chemistry and was an active member of Temple Emanu-El. Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Deborah Katz and her husband Ruben Lamdany and Dr. David Katz and his wife Rachel Friedman; and his grandchildren, Lyana, Noah, Daniel, Zachary, Maia and Dina. He was the brother of the late Fay Kaplan, Sam Shusterman, Sarah Krueger and Esther Berman. Funeral services will be held TODAY, Friday July 6th at 12:00 NOON in Temple Emanu-El, 99 Taft Ave., Providence with burial in Lincoln Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Temple Emanu-El. Shiva will be observed at his late residence, 1 Butler Ave. on Sun 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
