He was the husband of the late Clara (Capraro) Scungio. Born in Providence, a son of the late Benedetto and Assunta (Scuncio) Scungio, he lived in North Providence for over 50 years.
He was an Army Veteran of World War II, drafted on his 18th birthday. A member of Co. A 23rd Armored Infantry Battalion, his unit was crossing the Metz River waiting to attack a small town and they were hit by an 88 Tanker. Badly wounded on 9/15/44 he went to get help for his fellow soldiers. For this act of bravery he was commended and received a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and other citations for bravery shown during combat in Northern France. He was 19 years old.
After his hospitalization he was sent back to rejoin his unit in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. It was the coldest winter in 50 years. You had to worry about freezing to death. They lived outside most of the time. His feet became swollen and frostbitten, a condition he endured for the rest of his life.
He was a member of the DAV Chapter 21. The Purple Heart Association and the Horsemens Benevolent Association (HBTA) He trained race horses for 35 Years at Narragansett Park, Lincoln Downs, Suffolk Downs and many other race tracks in Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine and New Jersey.
He was devoted to his family, especially his grandsons.
He leaves two daughters, Beverly Depault and companion Raymond Maxwell, Mary Ann LaFazia and husband Kenneth, grandsons Jeff Depault and companion Rayna Swanton, Kenny Depault and his wife Sarah Depault, granddaughter Deborah Rossi, great-grandchildren Emily and Sadie Depault.
He was the brother of the late Anthony Scungio, Carmela Tagliarini, Margaret Rossi, Anna Rossi and Rose Hennessey.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony Church, 1413 Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence, followed by burial with military honors in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cherry Hill Nursing Home Activities Fund, 2 Cherry Hill Road, Johnston, RI 02919.
