She was born in Providence, the daughter of Alma (Colby) Langton and Raymond Langton. Ruth was the wife of John V. Markey who predeceased her in 1979. She was the mother of Susan Feeley (Richard), John Markey (Leslie), Nancy Corneau (Robert), and Linda Federowicz (Chet). Sister of William Langton (Judy McCaffrey) of Punta Gorda, Florida and the late Shirley Ferruccio (Michael). Grandmother of six – Erin Laser and Brendan Feeley, Danielle Wood and Jeffrey Laliberte, and Matthew and Jonathan Corneau. Ruth loved nothing more than spending time with her children, grandchildren, and her six great-grandchildren, Lucas and Colby, Elliot Ruth and Sloane, and James and Charlie. Doting over and spoiling all of them gave her great joy.
Ruth began working at a young age, primarily in retail and manufacturing. Her favorite job of all was working at Women & Infants Hospital. She started in the gift shop, where she made friends with hospital administrators, medical staff, and support staff. Following her time in the gift shop, she worked for a number of years as a clerk/unit secretary in various hospital departments, retiring after 20 years of service in 2007 at the age of 75.
Ruth was known by many as a true “free spirit”. When her kids were in grade school and high school, the family’s Christmas Eve parties were legendary. Family, neighbors, children’s friends – it didn’t matter, all were welcome. It was always a full house, with plenty of food and gifts for everyone. It was the highlight of the year for young and old. She was proud to own her own car and of the freedom that came with it. Well into her 80s she would think nothing of making the drive alone for a weekend visit to her son and daughter-in-law in Vermont. She kept her car and license until she turned 90. For many years, she was the driving force behind the “Friday Night Dinner Club”, a weekly gathering of family and friends for good food, great company, a drink or two, and lots of laughs. She also cherished times spent traveling the globe with her brother and sister-in-law, as well as other family members. Her travels to Ireland, England, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, tropical cruises, and winter stays in Florida were a source of great joy for her. Ruth’s children would like to thank their uncle Bill Langton and his wife Judy McCaffrey for making it all possible.
Per Ruth’s wishes, services will be limited to family. Donations may be made to Amos House, 460 Pine Street, Providence RI 02907 in Ruth’s name. Throughout the years, Ruth generously donated hundreds of her hand-knitted scarves, coordinating hats and gloves, as well as many, many boxes of personal care items to Amos House.
