

ProvidenceThelma M. Smith, 79, of College Road, died Wednesday evening at the home of her daughter Roberta, in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was the beloved wife of Robert E. Smith. They were married for fifty-five years. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late William R. and Marjorie I. (Welch) Cathers, she lived in Smithfield for many years before returning to Providence six years ago. Mrs. Smith was a communicant of Saint Pius V Church, and a former communicant of Saint Philip Church, Greenville. She was a member of the Pleasant View Homemakers Association. Beside her husband, she leaves a son, Francis H. Smith; two daughters, Roberta M. Bloomer and Madonna M. Smith; and twelve grandchildren, Elizabeth, Mary, Laura, Kristen, Thomas, Julie and Caroline Bloomer, and Emily, Patrick, John, Matthew, and Benjamin Smith. She was pre-deceased by her daughter, Marjorie I. Garrahan, and brothers, Earl and Donald Cathers, and sisters, Mildred Sullivan and Emily Cathers. The funeral will be held Monday, at 9:00 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Saint Pius V Church, Eaton Street, Providence. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Sunday, 3 - 5 pm.
