Alec Connor Lebel, 21, passed away at his home in Pueblo West, Colorado on February 18. Alec is survived by his parents, Lana (Burgo) and Richard, his beloved sister Olivia, several aunts and uncles and many cousins. Alec attended Pueblo West and Dolores Huerta high schools before earning his diploma from the Hope Academy in 2017. Alec had worked mostly in fast food and retail settings. Like so many others, his young, promising life was marred by drug addiction that eventually overcame him despite several attempts at rehabilitation. As a youngster Alec excelled at sports, particularly basketball and soccer. He loved traveling, especially to Portugal and Cape Cod. He had a special fondness for “ten-dollar words” and knew how to use them. He was beautiful and bright and readily made others laugh. Above all, with his insight, his vision, and his passionate heart, Alec had the soul of a poet. Alec’s visit with us was brief and vivid, and he has eternal comfort now. We will forever love and adore him. His life will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on February 29, 2020, at the George McCarthy Historic Chapel, 400 Broadway, Pueblo. Any donations should be made in Alec’s name to Southern Colorado Spay-Neuter Association, 1700 S. Prairie Ave, Pueblo, Colorado 81005.

I had the privilege to have Alec as a student at Hope Online Learning Academy. Alec was incredibly intelligent and at times his intelligence was intimidating, his random tidbits of facts and knowledge he would share with our class would have the students captivated by him and all he knew. Alec always had a smile and the most calming presence. The best memory I have of Alec, is when he earned a certificate of honor for his academic performance, we as a learning center were hosting an assembly to honor those students and Alec was trying to come up with every excuse not to attend, so in true Alec fashion we compromised, he allowed me to take a photo of him holding his certificate, if he could miss the ceremony as long as he promised to walk in his graduation ceremony that he rightfully earned. We will miss Alec and will always accept the challenge to not stop learning as he taught us.

I have so many great memories of Alec. Climbing tress, the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo, Six Flags, making crafts at my table, playing board games, the Pumpkin Patch and the Rio Grande River. A very smart individual, I recall him spelling pretty long words at a young age. Alec had a lovely sense of humor and appreciated beauty around him. The last time I saw Alec, he hugged me hard. Alec's life ended too soon, but when I think of him I'll smile remembering the loving spirit he was.
