Chuck was a hard worker, always worked from sun up to sun down. He had many small businesses in his life time. You may remember him most at Casper’s Donuts, which he owned and operated with his wife Beverly for 33 years, out in Blende. He was the friendly COWBOY behind the counter, or you could find him shooting the bull with the regulars. At night he would come in and cut donuts or ice them, to help out after getting off work at his day job. He was also known to deliver donuts before going to work at his small asphalt business. Chuck loved working with his hands and digging into his work He came away very satisfied when he looked at the finished project, whether it be the nice new driveway or a parking lot. The asphalt business may very well have been his favorite job.
In earlier years, Chuck and Bev also had a restaurant called Casper’s Kitchen. The old timers will remember it at Hwy 50 & 25th Lane. Their specialty that they were quite famous for was the Ranch Burger.
The Horses were another adventure… Raising Arabian horses was a hobby that gave them both such enjoyment. Though it was time consuming and tough, whether it be feeding horses or cleaning stalls, or pulling all nighters when Faylee decided to have her colt in the middle of the night, Chuck got it all done, and Bev was always by his side. They were great partners and they did it ALL together. .
Living on the Mesa, you either grew crops, had animals, or both. Of course Dad felt right at home, growing alfalfa and having several animals. He raised horses, cows, pigs, chickens, dogs, cats and we can’t forget the donkey, Eeyore, which still lives there today. Chuck grew up on a farm in Kansas, and this was just second nature to him. He was good at it.
He also enjoyed junking cars. I suppose mainly for extra income, but it was definitely a family affair. The kids got nice and dirty and got to keep all the change that we found in the seats of the cars. Bev was known at the scrap yard for backing that trailer in just right, so the crane could pick up the scrapped car and throw it into the crusher.
A full life for sure!
In recent years, Chuck had become ill, and with that, his mind and body could not go out and do the things he used to love. He endured several years of deteriorating health… But just like he would have wanted it… at 4:55 am, he left us, and went to his new job, his new adventure.
We love you and miss you, until we see you again! You are forever in our hearts!!!!
Peace be with you, Your Loving Family
