Diana Sue Dunn, my daughter, was born November 16, 1962 at Saint Joseph Hospital, Denver, Colorado.  She weighed in at 5 pounds, 12 ounces, with big, exploring eyes.


For Sue’s first year of life her large eyes went from blue, to hazel until settling on a beautiful green. She had a favorite stuffed skunk called Stinky that she liked to cuddle with and kept close to her at all times.


At first, we called her Diana Sue, then we shortened the name to Di-Sue, then we called her Susie or Sue. When ready to start kindergarten, Sue and I chatted about what she wanted to be called at school. Sue, using her 5-year-old wisdom, decided at school she would like to be called Diana and at home, called Sue – a solution that worked out well.


Sue lived with her parents, Larry and Karen, 2-year older brother Dean in North Denver for her first year. The family then moved to the suburbs of Denver. When Sue was 3 and a half her sister Kay was born which delighted Sue to have a younger sister.


After high school Sue married Jim Carpenter, moved to Chicago, where her daughter Marie was born. Sue and Marie came to visit Colorado when Marie was about 6 months old. When it was time for them to return to Chicago, Kay, Sue, Marie and I drove to Chicago, stopping in Iowa to visit relatives. The adventures of the trip included snowstorm, stranded in an Iowa motel, and lots of visiting with relatives, which included Marie’s Great Great Grandmother.  


When Marie was 7, along came her baby brother James at which time I visited Chicago to spend with Sue and family. I visited school with Marie, was entertained watching James learn new skills, and enjoyed time with Sue and Jim.


Sue moved back to Colorado with Marie and James about 34 years ago. They settled in Pueblo, filling their lives with day-to-day ups, downs, adventures, and everyday tasks. I kept in contact with Sue through visits, phone calls, and letters.

Diana Sue, aka Sue or Susie, was my older sister. She and I shared a room for the first twelve years of my life. We shared everything in that room–secrets, hopes, fights, viruses–truly everything.

Sue was my first teacher once she started school. She taught me to read at a very young age, downstairs in the playroom that contained a student desk and a chalkboard. When she was the teacher, I had to call her Mrs. Rears (or something like that–it was the name of her teacher). We went over the alphabet, letter sounds, numbers, and all. Each day we read the comics together in the Rocky Mountain News. She made me start reading the comic “Nancy” first, as it was simple with simple drawings and words I could handle. I couldn't wait to get to where I could read the more complex comic “Kerry Drake” on my own!

In that room of ours, Sue introduced me to a love of music, pop, rock, R&B, 50s oldies. And, of course, since it was the 1970s, Casey Casem’s Top 40 Count Down every Sunday night on KIMN radio. We would lay in bed and debate which song would be #1. We’d tear up at the “long distance dedication” story. One of my favorite albums will always be Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors. Sue and I played the songs from that album over and over, along with the 45 record of "Landslide" from their first album.

When Sue moved to Chicago with Jim, I got to visit them a few times. Marie was just a tiny toddler, and Sue was already giving her the love of reading she fostered in me. When James was born, she gave him the love of reading, too.

As we got older, Sue and I didn’t quite see eye to eye on life. But I had hope that someday we would. I made a promise to myself that I would reach out to Sue this year, but that did not get to happen. Hope, however, is eternal. I hope that the love for Sue guides everyone who reads this to treat their loved ones with the hope of always making it through the tough times.

My mom loved the outdoors and so did my dad we would always go camping when  my dad got sick when I was 17 it was just me and her she loved animals too animals when we moved we got a cat  it was the first cat we both ever had we only had dogs before so my mom  raised the cat like a dog she named the cat tiger  she was more than a mom to me she was my best friend we would do everything together
