Steve was born in Pueblo, Colorado to Dale and Peggy Brown. He grew up in Pueblo with a love and appreciation for nature and horses. He was especially fond of the time spent at his grandparent’s farm in Delta, CO. He made many great memories through the years on that farm and eventually made memories with his children there as well.
Steve attended Pueblo South High School and participated in high school rodeo. He enjoyed riding broncs and bulls and cherished the friendships he made during those years. The love of rodeo remained with him throughout his life.
Steve was married twice. At a young age he married Debbie Stockton and they had two daughters together, Shawna and Kasey. His second marriage was to Susan Rosenthal. Steve had the honor of sharing his life with not only Susie but also with her two sons Adam and Seth. Steve and Susie’s son Roan was born and the family was complete. Steve loved being a father and spending time with his children. It was very important to Steve to be a good role model, to teach the boys how to be men, to demonstrate a love for God and Jesus, and to provide for his family.
Eventually Steve became “Papa”. His grandchildren Taylor “Twinkle Bug” and Brett “Frog” were born to Shawna and her husband John. Jayce “Dweezel” and Gus “A-gustus” were born to Kasey and her husband Waco. His granddaughter Taylor made him a great Papa with her daughter Gianna “Peanut”. Steve delighted in his relationship with each of them.
Steve had a variety of careers in his life. He was probably most proud of becoming a park ranger and freelance writer. While briefly living in Texas he worked for Winter’s Rodeo Livestock Company, he spent some years working for the waterworks in both Leadville and Pueblo and met Susie while working for Sperry.
Steve loved doing ministry work and helping the less fortunate. In his spare time Steve was a chaplain for the High Plains Drifters. He spent holidays and weekends volunteering to help and feed the homeless. Steve even spent time in Uganda sharing his love for Christ with the people there.
Steve was a man who despite his rough exterior had an unexpected personality. He had a love for the beautiful little moments in life. He loved connecting with people and making sure they knew he saw to the heart of who they were. He loved the Colorado mountains and all the beauty they held. A day spent riding his motorcycle down the highway or an old country road was a day well spent to Steve. His treasure was not in material things but in the love of his children and grandchildren and the friends and family that he held dear. Steve loved the simple things, a baby’s laugh, wildflowers blooming in a spring meadow, the first cup of coffee in the dawn of morning, new life of animals and plants alike. He had eyes that saw the greatness in life. He will be greatly missed.
