Mom, it's been a month since you left.  I think about you everyday.  I would have given you anything you wanted.  But I couldn't give you the one, single thing you wanted the most. That will haunt me for a long time. Say hello to Dad, Grandma, Tony, Helen and Josie.  Love always, Linda

Eulogy given by Virginia's Grandson, Kevin Holland, at her funeral:
I have been to far too many funerals for my short 21 years on this earth. Those of friends and family. The young and the old. There is nothing to make the pain pass, even if death has not come by surprise - the hurt and grief cannot be washed away. No pill to take, no magic words to be said. I've searched high and low to find something to dull the pain, but with no success. But what I have found is everyone has a choice on what they do after a passing. Some focus on a happy memory from the past, some just shut down their body to emotion. Some focus on the dates written on the gravestone. Even with as much sadness as may have in your heart right now, flood that sadness with memories of happiness, of joy, of celebration and of success. My grandmother lived a long life, a life that we should celebrate, no matter difficult that may be. 

I would like to share a story with you today, a story about how my grandmother and grandfather met. During World War II soldiers would be shipped out of town by a train. The train would pass under a bridge and girls would drop down their addresses in the hopes of having a young man write to them throughout the war. My grandma was one of those girls and my grandpa was one of those soldiers. Through an act of fate or from the hand of God, the note my grandma dropped made its way into the hands of my grandpa. The two wrote to one another through the war and their love flourished. It grew so much that when my grandpa returned from the war he went to see his mother first and my grandma second. As we all know, the two were happily married until they were separated by death. I remember my grandmother standing over my grandfather's casket at his funeral, saying with tears in her eyes, “You are more beautiful than the day I met you.” What a love that must have been, something so pure and true that it could withstand the trials and tribulations of this thing we call life.  

As we remember my grandmother today, let us fill our sadness with the joy of this love. This love that is truly eternal. And let us take comfort in knowing that just as my grandmother waited for my grandfather to return from war, he has been waiting for her to return to him in Heaven - where they can finally be together forever in the eternal light of love.


My mother was an incredible woman.  She was unassuming, beautiful, virtuous, generous, kind, and courageous.  There just aren't enough adjectives in Webster's Dictionary to describe her.  I got to know my mom more over the past 6 months than I did over the past 50 years.  I will hold forever in my heart the warm and funny conversations we had over the past several months.  

I can still see her walking to the back door to let me in whenever I'd arrive unannounced from Denver to visit.  I still see her sitting at the kitchen table playing solitaire while watching The Price is Right.  I still can hear her asking me to be sure and call her when I got back to Denver to ensure I made it safely back.  I'll start to pick up the phone to call her to see how she's doing, then hang up because I suddenly remember that no one is home.

I will wear red and purple more often in her honor (her favorite colors).  I will start wearing the clothes and shoes I've been saving for a special occasion, because she would have done the same.  I will try and be brave and courageous in the face of adversity and pain just as she was her entire life.  I will endeavor to enjoy life as much as she did.   And when I don't know what path to take, I'll ask myself, “What would mom do?”

Mom, I hope to see you, dad, grandma, Josie, Helen, and Tony on the other side.  In the meantime, I know that even though you've crossed over, you'll continue to watch over us kids, just like you've always done.  You're just that kind of caring, selfless mom.

Beautiful pictures! I always enjoyed visiting and seeing her.  She was such a great cook and always kind.  The last of my aunts. Blessings to my cousins.

   Grandma was one of a kind. She was the person you would always tell your secrets to and know that she would never tell a soul. She always told you how it was and never would sugar coat it. I loved that about her.
   I have so many memories of her and with her. As a child when I would sleep with her and if I would kick off the blankets; I remember her smacking my legs and telling me "put them back under the blankets your going to get a cold."  Like, when we would make potica depending on the time of year we would listen to Jim Reeves or Frankie Yankovic. I loved hearing her sing or hum to the music. The other is how superstitious she was... never put new shoes on a table because it was bad luck and your feet would hurt and if you see a black cat on Friday the 13th turn back around and go home. 
    I enjoyed all the years I had with her. I loved baking, cooking, visiting, going to church with her, going to dinner once a week, and the nights I stayed with her in the past and recent talking in bed about grandpa and our marriages. 
    My wish that came true last year. I wanted my grandma at my wedding. She was in the front row at the church and was the most beautiful person at the reception. Over the years I've watched my husband and grandma relationship develop. She always would give my husband a quick slug to his arm and laugh. They both would laugh and smile. That was so important to me is seeing the people I love bond. 
         I love you grandma. You are my heart and my best friend. I'm not going to say goodbye, I'm going to say I'll see you soon.
