Marlene Powell Hines was born on November 14, 1936 in Portsmouth, VA, to the late James E. and Marion A. Powell. She was a graduate of I.C. Norcom High School in the class of 1954. She moved to Washington, DC, in her early years where she worked for the General Services Administration for 35 years as an Employee Compensation Specialist until retirement. Thereafter, she moved to Tacoma, WA, where she lived for over 18 years. Mom was an extraordinary woman with great strengths and character. She enjoyed life to the fullest worshiping with her church family at Bethel Baptist Church, participating in activities at the Beacon Senior Citizens Activity Center, membership in the Tacoma Red Hatters, and the Black Woman's Caucus of Tacoma. She loved dancing and was an avid gardener. Marlene leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Glynele Winston (Kelvin) of Universal City, TX, and Suzette Hines of Arlington, VA, a son-in-law, Lorrin Whisnant of Tacoma, WA, a brother, Dr. Nathaniel Powell (Jean) of Ann Arbor, MI, two sisters, Christine Boyd (Clinton) of Tuskegee, AL, Joyce Gibbs of Rochester, MN, grandchildren, Andrew, Aaron, Audrea, and Anson Winston of Universal City, TX, and Sean and Lorryn Whisnant of Tacoma, WA, and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Marion Powell, her daughter, Angela Hines Whisnant, and her sister, Geraldine P. Wilson. A Celebration of Her Life will be on Friday, July 18th at 1:00pm at Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup.
