Bernadette Creswell, affectionately known as “Tinker” and “Bernie” was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on March 27, 1951 to Amelia and Berned Creswell Jr. Early in life, Bernadette moved with her family to Jamaica, New York where she attended Saint Clement Pope’s Elementary School, graduating 8th grade in 1964. Tinker then attended 2 high schools, namely Saint Frances DeSalles in Powhaton, Virginia and Delehanty High School in Jamaica, Queens before graduating from John Adams High School in 1968. Bernie continued her education by attending Atlantic Community College before obtaining her Bachelors Degree from York College in 1975 as well as a Masters Degree from Queens College later in life.
Bernadette loved children!! In fact, she worked for the New York City Board of Education for 30 years before retiring in 2013. Bernie taught a plethora of grades and subjects, from kindergarten through 8th grade and from reading to life skills. Educating children and developing productive relationships with them was TRULY her passion. In 1976, Bernadette bore a son, Raymond, and her life became complete.
After retirement, Bernie maintained an active lifestyle by doing the things that she loved most……attending aqua aerobics, playing board games, hosting her annual Thanksgiving dinner, and, above all, talking on the phone with family and friends. She also became heavily involved with OverEaters Anonymous. It was through this organization that Bernie learned that there was more to life than food, as she struggled throughout most of her life with weight, gaining and losing hundreds of pounds. Tinker expressed contentment that society is finally starting to accept people who suffer from this condition.
Bernie was a beautiful person, inside and out. She had an extraordinary ability to bring joy to those around her. Tinker’s infectious laughter and warm smile were a constant source of comfort and solace for anyone fortunate enough to know her. She had an incredible knack for lifting spirits, effortlessly brightening even the darkest of days. In addition, Bernadette embodied the true essence of compassion. Her capacity to empathize and understand the struggles of others was nothing short of remarkable. Whether it was offering a listening ear, providing a shoulder to lean on, or simply offering a kind word of encouragement, Bernie always made sure that everyone felt seen, heard, and loved.
As we say farewell, let us remember Bernadette as a shining example of what it means to be selfless, compassionate, and full of love. Her memory will forever be etched in our hearts, serving as a constant reminder to give of ourselves, to spread kindness, and to make a difference in the lives of others.
