Our beloved father passed away peacefully at home on Monday morning, April 7, at the age of 99. He is survived by his three loving daughters: Lisa Santoro (Frank), Carol DiTomasso (Anthony), and Kristy Giordano (Matt); five cherished grandchildren: Francesca Morris (Joseph), Amanda Hunker (Matthew), Kristina Pjetri (Peter), Christian and Cayden Giordano; and two great-grandchildren: Jace and Camden Morris.
He is also survived by his brother, Richard Kunz (Helen); nephew Christopher Kunz (Danielle) and their children Isabella, Charlie, and Thomas; niece Wendy Kunz; and his adored grand-dogs: Amber, Casper, Yogi, and Jameson, along with his canary, Petey.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 22, 1925, he left high school early to help his father with the family lunch wagon. At just 17, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he served as a radioman aboard the USS Catron, stationed in the Pacific. He loved sharing stories and photographs from his time in the Navy—years that deeply shaped him.
Following the war, he earned his GED and later graduated from NYU with a bachelor’s degree in finance. He went on to build a long and successful career at Pioneer Savings and Loan Association, starting in the mortgage department and working nights to earn his master’s degree. Through determination and hard work, he rose to become president and chairman of the board before retiring.
He was a man of deep dedication—to both his work and, above all, his family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Loretta; his son, Eric; and his parents, George and Rose Kunz.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to either The Life Church or the Hudson Valley Honors Flight, two organizations close to his heart.
