Madeleine Pierre-Louis was born on May 18, 1924 to Rose Celestin Charles and Buriard Charles in Jean-Rabel, Haiti. She was called home to join the Lord and her late husband Voltaire Pierre-Louis on Thursday, October 20, 2016. She passed away peacefully from natural causes.
Madeleine pursued a career as a school teacher. In 1950, she married the love of her life Voltaire Pierre-Louis in her hometown and moved to Port-De-Paix. Together they had five beautiful children: Evelyne, Herriot, Astrid, Naudin & Annick. She migrated to the United States in 1969 and lived in Brooklyn, NY for a few years. She was the first in the family to take the courageous journey. After working two jobs for 6 years, she was able to facilitate the successful immigration of her husband and five children in 1975. In 1982, they all settled into their family home in Queens Village.
As the matriarch of her family, Madeleine played an extremely active role in the lives of those she loved. Whether it be in the midst of cooking, giving advice or passing along one of her many skills, Madeleine loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved all of her grandchildren equally, but had a special way of making them each feel like they were her favorite.
Madeleine was an extremely talented seamstress who enjoyed sewing. She was an avid churchgoer who loved the Lord. She was a woman of immeasurable strength. She also loved watching Family Feud, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune on television. She had an infectious laugh and wonderful sense of humor.
Affectionately known as Mado, Mama, Manma, Grandma, Man Vol, Man Voltaire, Madan Apentè, Man Tètè, Man Kèkè, Ma Tante, Tante Dèdène and Dèdène, Madeleine is survived by her 5 children, 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and countless extended family members and friends. At 92, Madeleine lived a full, wonderful life and she will be missed tremendously. Those who were blessed to have known her will carry her memory on in their hearts forever. Today, we pay homage to a wonderful woman who embodied courage, passion and strength.
