Richard dedicated his life to being a hero. His career first started in the US Army, serving in the Vietnam War with the 82nd Airborne Division. His bravery continued in the FDNY, serving over 27 years with Ladder 56, Engine 48 in the Fordham section of the Bronx- one of the busiest firehouses in New York City. Richard's dedication was evident when he once put out a fire almost single handedly to ensure the safety of others, a testament to his selfless nature. As a first responder on September 11, 2001, he was among the brave souls who rushed into danger to save lives, embodying the true spirit of heroism.
Richard was also a distinguished martial artist, holding a 4th-degree black belt. He dedicated his time at the Malverne School of Self-Defense. He found immense joy in the dojo and instilled the same passion in those around him. His love for karate was matched only by his affection and dedication for his family. He was known for his honesty, loyalty, and dependability. His blunt manner and affectionate nicknames for everyone he knew reflected his genuine and caring nature. He endearingly called his grandchildren “Bunny Rabbits” with the exception of his youngest that he called Scooter. He was delighted in playing with them and attending their soccer games. Richard’s love for fire department outings and Christmas was well-known, and his robust spirit will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on through the legacy he leaves behind.
A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, September 22, 2024 from 2-5pm. Entombment of ashes will be on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 10:30am at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY.
