Robert was a dear friend and collage.  We spent several years together at UWM working on our degrees, keeping the Gast Haus economically afloat, and shared an apartment for a short time.  He was always so kind and constantly hilarious.  Robert invited a couple of us to go to Guyana and as expected, it was a grand adventure.  
He taught me something that I do to this day, when opening a new bottle of libation, pour a dram or two on the ground before imbibing for "those that that can't be with us today".  I will pour a good splash tonight in Robert's memory.

My sincere condolences to all the family.  I was Robert’s PhD advisor, but in actuality we were equal academic partners and firm friends.  Robert introduced me and others to Guyana in the 1980s, and I will be forever grateful to him and his brothers for their unfailing hospitality.  Always modest and self-deprecating, his card-playing, sociability,  warmth, charm and wonderful humour will be missed greatly.

I really feel sad about my finding out my stepfather past, he made a deep impression in my life. He was there when my biological father wasn't and loved me and my mother with all his heart. Love you Robert.

Robert was a gentleman, a mensch, and a friend.   We remember and honor him.


We are sorry to learn of Dr. Ramraj's death. We enjoyed his participation with us for many years as he played bridge at our Vital Living Senior Center. We offer our sympathy to Robert's family and friends.

He truly touched our life and embraced us with open arms. He was the first person to welcome us into our neighborhood in Winston-Salem … I knew instantly we were going to hit it off. I am very sorry to here of the passing of Dr. Ramraj. I met him once in 2002 when he hired me to work on illustrations, maps, and photos for his text book, "Guyana: Population, Environments, Economic Activities". It was such a an honor to work with him on his text book. He taught me a lot about Guyana geography which he was very passionate about.

Our family deepest sympathy to Sir Ramraj family. We are very sorry for his passing and sadness for such a great geography teacher at Lusignan School. Sir Ramraj was brilliant geography teacher that know his subject area. He would taught from your home area eg Courbane Park start-from Hardoward factory. The store lot 1 Annandale to the Hindu temple. That was due to  the fact there was no temple.
The factory still 1Ato the house behind the temple also 11A.
Some students was in contact with him that because the geographical location we all live.

Heartfelt condolences to the Ramraj family on the loss of Robert Ramraj. As the cloud of grief wanes, the memories linger forever. Many know Robert as a jovial individual. At first, I too was amused by his jokes. I quickly learned that I had to listen to him more attentively. His wit often conveyed some profound life lessons. He was always thoughtful and self-confident.
Migration might have fragmented our geographical locations but not the bonds of friendship. Our visits and telephone conversations  transcend time and space as we reminiscenced from the serious to the mundane. From Valmiki to Naipaul, or catching crabs on the mudflats on the ECD.
The sun has set; - Bro. Bish is ending his lament: "Tum na janay kis jahaan mein kho gaye" For a new day is beckoning.

My heartfelt sympathy to the  entire Ramraj family  on the passing of a great yet humble soul. Ganga was my beloved cousin. He moved from simple beginnings, overcoming all obstacles in his path to achieve the highest educational glory of receiving his Ph.D.
He always stood strong for his siblings and his mother. I am proud of how he lived his life.
I am sad today, but I pray that he is reborn in a happy, peaceful and loving home.

I met Uncle Robert through my wife and her family, and I am so glad I did. What an amazing, thoughtful and caring soul. Uncle Robert always had a joke as well as great life advice every single time we had an interaction. I will miss him tremendously, especially when I'm looking for an amazing dominoes partner. I met  Mr. Ramraj,  my Geography teacher at Annandale Secondary School and  the next time I saw him was many years after in  NY at  the literary event in little Guyana..  Mr. Ramraj  continued to be the same  friendly, easy-going and  respectable individual I knew. He will be dearly  missed.

I was born in Tulsi Dam, Annandale (which was in the current vicinity of Harduwar Furniture Factory). I lived in Annandale and I taught at Annandale Sec School, I have seen the cow pastures transformed into a housing scheme, but I never understood the geography of Annandale until Robert joined the staff.

Robert had the students working on scale drawings of Annandale North, Annandale South, Annandale West and Courabane Park. Every house lot together with house number was on those drawings. The streets were aligned East to West, but the house numbers were listed numerically North to South. This was an anomaly that I really couldn’t fathom.
These excellent drawings were done manually by students of Robert, decades before the invention of Google Maps.  I was privileged to have a copy of the drawings which I kept in my teaching memorabilia.

Robert made his teaching interesting by relating his subject matter to relevant issues in everyday life. He was an excellent teacher who was highly respected and admired by his students. He had a simple, quiet personality and was always willing to offer a helping hand.

I can vividly recall a picture of Robert and Bishram sharing a motorcycle as their mode of transportation to and from different schools.
After a gap of about two decades, I was fortunate to meet Robert at an Annandale Secondary School Reunion in Toronto, and on another occasion at the launching of his first publication.
Dr Robert Ramraj, we will miss you as an academic, a friend, a teacher, a colleague and one who has set standards worthy of emulation, in spite of all hurdles along your path.
May your atma have a peaceful resting place!

I first met Robert Ramraj in 1971 when I joined the teaching staff at Annandale Government Secondary School.
He was such a dedicated teacher and was highly respected both by his students and his peers.
In 1981 , I was fortunate to meet him in Canada ,Toronto where I lived . My wife and I had him over for supper and we  reflected very fondly about teaching at the school - the memories were heartfelt and sometimes humorous.
  I do remember a quote that says:-

                 "  We do not have to rely on memories to recapture the spirit of those we have loved and loss-
                     they live within our souls in some perfect sanctuary which even death cannot destroy . "

In Loving Memory of a Teacher and Friend ~ Dr. Robert Ramraj

I first met Mr. Ramraj while attending Lusignan Primary School.  And then again when he joined the Staff at Annandale Government Secondary School (AGSS). Though not under his direct tutelage, I learned much from his guidance and encouragement.  After High School, we later reconnected in Canada.  He was always interested in, and fully supported the efforts of the Annandale Secondary School Alumni.  He attended most, if not all of our planned events.  At one stage, Dr. Ramraj returned to volunteer in a teaching capacity at AGSS.

In 2004, I assisted in the Canadian Launch of his first book, "GUYANA: Population, Environments, Economics Activities".  At that event, he presented a copy of his publication to President B. Jagdeo who was in attendance. (see above Pic).  A number of these books can be found on the shelves of AGSS library.

Despite his scholastic achievement, he always remained humble. On learning of his passing, some students remembered him this way:
~ "He was a teacher who had the most passes in Geography in AGSS." B.S.
~ "I remember him as very intelligent as our Geography teacher.  very cool guy, he was." S.M.
~ "A humble spoken gentleman with soft speech...are my memories." M.S.

Over the years,  Robert and I remained in close contact.  I benefited immensely from his broad knowledge, sound advice, and jovial nature.  He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

A Memory worth reliving.

It was early days in the teaching stint of Mr. Ramraj at Annandale Government Secondary School. The then Geography specialist had just commenced his lesson. It was a rather gloomy Friday morning. Suddenly, a very strong wind developed. There was a loud bang;  the classroom door was forced open and our teacher's chalkboard toppled.  The tall lanky bespectacled Mr. Ramraj was nearly swept off his feet. Seemingly unfazed by that unforseen development, our teacher, trying to steady himself continued on with his lecture. It was as though he did not want to lose even a second of his 45 minute time slot.

As students, we were thoroughly amused over the incident. Now, on reflection, we certainly can have no doubt that such was the dedication and commitment of this amazing educator, scholar, mentor, and human being whose example is surely worthy of emulation.

He became a close family friend as we were living very close together in Linden, Guyana. Though we never met each other in the USA we stayed in touch as he was sure to call ever year during the Christmas holidays. I suspected that something was amiss health wise as he did not call last year and my call went unanswered.  His friends, colleagues and family will miss him dearly. May he Rest In Peace.
