Sylvia Gordon-Johnson was born on October 2, 1943 in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica, West Indies. She attended Broadleaf All Age School. She spent her early years in this parish until she left in her late teens and moved to Kingston, in search of a better life.
Sylvia had a thirst for knowledge and was very driven and ambitious. She was always in search of ways to better herself. A great opportunity arose when she was able to travel to Canada in 1976. She spent a few years living and working there before making another move to Brooklyn, New York in 1981. Her hard work and ambition paid off when she became a proud homeowner in 1993, a tangible sign of achieving the American dream.
She worked very hard to provide for her six children: Donovan, Annmarie, Jacqueline, Michael, Sheryl, and Simone, all born in Jamaica. As a single mother, with determination and perseverance, she brought her children and six of her grandchildren to New York.
Sylvia was employed as a caregiver of children for several years before moving on to a career with the postal service. Although the full retirement term was thirty years, she would always proclaim: “I will not give them more than twenty years.” She kept her word and did indeed retire after twenty years.
Sylvia made the most of her time in retirement by traveling all over the world. When not traveling, you could find her out in her garden during the warm months, busy with her beloved flowers and fruit trees. She had an amazing way with plants. Anything she touched grew and flourished. As an animal lover, she owned several cats in addition to taking care of strays.
Sylvia was a classy lady. She enjoyed the finer things in life and exemplified that in her choices and attitude. She frequently shopped in the city and attended many Broadway shows there.
Sylvia is survived by her six children, eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, sisters Joy and Annette, brother Kenneth, and beloved uncle, Eustace Gordon. As a family, we say farewell to Sylvia and honor her legacy. May she rest in peace with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
