Virginia was born on April 26, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of Reynolds and Ethel (McDonald) Poole. She is survived by her daughter, (Virginia) Ellen Maguire and husband Ed, sons Christopher Leggiere and wife Cathleen, and Gregory Litterine and his wife Iris. Gerard Litterine, her life partner of more than 20 years, and her son, Raymond Minion, pre-deceased her.
Virginia has nine grandchildren: Tara, Keith, his fiancé Janine, and Jared (DiBattista); Christopher, Anthony, Cathleen and her husband Nick; Michael, Jerry, Jaclyn and her partner Steven, along with five great-grandchildren; Jordan, Grace, Emma, Kayla and Thomas.
Virginia’s first thoughts were always of her family, and the lessons she taught through her persistence, resilience, straight-talk and common sense will long be remembered.
For many years she was an integral member of the Queens Village-Hollis-Bellerose Volunteer Ambulance Corp, serving in a multitude of roles. She was honored for her volunteer work by the Mayor at Gracie Mansion and recognized by both the New York State Senate and the United States Senate.
Virginia was famous for knitting beautiful “Alpine” afghans, even winning a blue ribbon! All of her family members and many of her friends have one of her beautiful creations. Certainly, these will be cherished for years to come.
“The things that matter most in our lives are not fantastic or grand. They are the moments when……we are there in the most attentive or caring way.” Her sons, Greg and Chris, tended to her every need, especially in her last months and days, in the most attentive, caring way. Chris was able to stay with her at her home, for many months, caring for her constantly.
Her family would like to thank Hospice and especially her nurse, Rosanne Siegel, for their care and kindness. Donations can be made in Virginia’s memory to Hospice Care Network, 99 Sunnyside Boulevard, Woodbury, New York, 11797, 516-832-7100.
